Estimate of North Korean Plutonium Stockpile Boosted

The United States has boosted its estimate of the amount of weapon-usable plutonium believed to be held by North Korea, the Washington Post reported today (see GSN, May 13).

Pyongyang has claimed that its Yongbyon nuclear reactor has produced roughly 30 kilograms of plutonium.  U.S. officials have always considered that a low figure; intelligence analysts are now set to put the amount at 35 to 40 or 50 to 60 kilograms....Full Story

The Nuclear Security Project is making significant progress, increasing the political space for addressing global nuclear dangers and advancing understanding of the steps needed to reduce nuclear dangers.

The Project builds on the January 4, 2007 Wall Street Journal op-ed by former Secretary of State George Shultz former Secretary of Defense Bill Perry, former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger and former Senator Sam Nunn. NTI serves as the Secretariat for the Project.

More than two-thirds of the living former U.S. secretaries of state, secretaries of defense and national security advisors — spanning the Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush Administrations — support the project.

A May 2008 meeting of more than 150 ambassadors and representatives to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Preparatory Conference in Geneva resulted in a productive discussion about how the Nuclear Security Project can help spur a revival of the nonproliferation consensus in 2010.
